I posted a sketch on “why you shouldn’t smoke” on Instagram. A guy tagged his partner in the comments, who used to smoke a lot. They both reached out to me after a few months and shared how the person stopped smoking after that.
Now, for me, that’s a success.
- If making a reel on Instagram makes you happy, you are successful.
- If dancing like hell, to your fav song in front of hundreds of people still makes you happy, you are successful.
- If you find happiness in just travelling around, doesn’t care what relatives would call you, YOU ARE SUCCESSFUL!
Let me ask you something:
Are you rich?
Are you happy?
If your answer to the second one is ‘yes’, then my friend you are successful. But believe me, if you are rich, that doesn’t guarantee the later one.
Now, this article is not about ‘5 steps’ to make more money and be successful in life or any of those things.
The greater point — within that title are two things that should not always go together — money and success. And we’ll be discussing all the misconceptions attached with them. We’re obsessed with equating success to monetary value.
Jim Carrey once said:
Let me tell you some things that success is NOT.
- Success is not what someone tells you it is
- There is no equation for success
- Success is not money
- Success is not fame or followers
Success came to me through the simplest of pleasures. I didn’t need a million dollar Lamborghini to make me feel like I was on top of the world. I didn’t need 20k followers to make me feel I’m successful. Lying on a beach with friends spending no money gave me far more than I could ever imagine.
Go beyond what society tells you about money. Most of it is a lie. The money will not give you success or make you happy. Only you can!
I don’t know why people attempt to relate money to success.
I get it. Money is a huge driving factor for a lot of things. It’s essential for everyday life to be honest, and it is the ultimate measuring stick for whether or not a business is successful. So, maybe that’s where everyone gets it from. I don’t know.
The point is, you don’t have to make a lot of money to be successful. You could be below the poverty line and consider yourself successful. It’s mostly subjective.
So, How Do You Do That?
So, what is the best version of yourself? Because you need to be that person. People have a tendency to influence your opinions, actions or thoughts. However, you only have yourself at the end of the day and live with the consequences of your own actions.
So, taking ownership of who you are is something you need to wear with pride. And that will give you happiness.
Many of us go through life wondering about the “what ifs.” The truth is that people will always be prettier, nicer or have a better life than you. But there will never be a person like yourself. You are unique.
No One Else’s Opinion Really Matter
Surely, you’ve met and you’re going to meet people who will knock you down. Sometimes, they are good people, and sometimes they aren’t. Sometimes, they are angry and quick to judge, or sometimes you just caught them on a bad day.
We get caught up in others’ opinions of ourselves too often. As a result, we adjust ourselves and hide personality traits we think may cause others to laugh at us. So, the idea of “owning it” comes back. Why should you care what other people think? Are they you? Are they living your life? No!
What You Can Do Now?
For each person, regardless of you’re a leader, manager, worker, or student, having a continuous willingness to be vulnerable is the fundamental difference between staying stuck in today and leaping into tomorrow.
When there are no guarantees, we must be willing to act decisively and confidently.
Start going where you have never gone before, and create the space for others to do the same.
I was hoping by the end of this article you would be able to look at your own life and see the little successes that have gotten you to where you are today.
So, go ahead and make a list and encourage yourself.
Most of all, I request you to stop equating success with money. Success is so many other things.
Live your life to Express, not Impress. (A short blog you might find interesting)
So let’s stop undercutting the value of success. And be happy with what we have.
Thank you, everyone, for reading this far. Let me know if it helped you in any way. Share your success story!
Single people like me! I hope you get it what I mean with ‘being happy with what we have’. Okay! Don’t take it otherwise (:P). I’m talking about ‘Time’. I know you people have a lot of time to kill, you can read my other blogs here. Also, you can check out some stupidest sketches here, mostly on social issues.
